Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. Are any other DTCs set? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Allow the engine to idle. Observe the CMP Resync Counter with the scan tool. Is the CMP Resync Counter incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector. Start engine. Observe CMP Resync on the scan tool. Did the CMP Resync Counter stop incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  5. Turn ignition off. With the CMP connector still disconnected connect a Digital Multimeter (DMM) set to the DC Hz scale from the CMP signal circuit, the PCM side, and to ground. Start and idle the engine. Does the DMM display a Hertz reading greater than zero Hz? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Check CMP sensor harness for incorrect routing at secondary ignition wires or coil. Check circuit for short to another circuit that generates a frequency (i.e. solenoids, relays or motors). Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to step  8.
  7. Turn ignition off. Check for a faulty connection at CMP sensor harness connector. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to step  9.
  8. Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to step  11.
  9. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Check CMP sensor terminals at PCM for faulty connection. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  10. Replace CMP sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
  11. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  12. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
