Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Attempt to start engine. Will the engine start? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose no-start condition. See NO-START DIAGNOSIS in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  3. Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data for this DTC. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC or as close to the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data that you observed. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5.
  4. With engine running, wiggle harness connectors to PCM, ICM, CKP sensor and related circuits. Listen for engine to stumble. Does the engine stumble? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to step  7.
  5. Operate any non-engine related electronic component on vehicle. Using scan tool, observe the Med. Resolution Resync Counter. Does the Med. Resolution Resync Counter on the scan tool increment while operating any non-engine related electronic components? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  4.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check for poor terminal connection or replace terminal in circuit which caused engine to stumble. Repair electrical connection or terminal in circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step  13.
  7. Did the MIL illuminate in step  3? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  8. Turn ignition off. Check PCM, ICM or CKP sensor for rubbed-through wire insulation or pinched wiring. Repair as necessary. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  10.
  9. Turn ignition off. Repair circuit of malfunctioning or interfering component. Move any wiring that is causing the interference away from CKP sensor and ICM wiring harness. After repairs, go to step  13.
  10. Replace CKP sensor. After replacing sensor, operate engine at idle for 5 minutes or until MIL turns on. Did MIL illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  11. Turn ignition off. Replace ICM. Start and operate engine at idle for 5 minutes or until MIL turns on. Did MIL illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  12. Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM. Operate engine at idle for 5 minutes or until MIL turns on. Did MIL illuminate? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  13. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  14. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
