Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the rear axle housing cover. Refer to REAR AXLE HOUSING COVER AND GASKET REPLACEMENT  .
  4. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to REAR AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT (8.6 INCH AXLE W/O JL4, 9.5 INCH AXLE)  or REAR AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT (8.6 INCH AXLE W/JL4)  or REAR AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT (9.75 INCH AXLE)  .
  5. To remove the seal only, use a suitable seal remover.
  6. To remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing together from the axle housing, use the J 45857  (1) and the J2619-01  (2).
