Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  2. Remove the differential assembly. Refer to DIFFERENTIAL REPLACEMENT (8.6 INCH, 9.5 INCH AXLES)  or DIFFERENTIAL REPLACEMENT (9.75 INCH AXLE)  or DIFFERENTIAL REPLACEMENT (10.5 INCH AXLE)  .
  3. Remove the pinion gear bearing retainer. Refer to DRIVE PINION HOUSING AND/OR SEAL REPLACEMENT  .
  4. Remove the pinion and the pinion bearings. Refer to DRIVE PINION HOUSING AND/OR SEAL REPLACEMENT  .

    Important:  The ring gear bolts have left-hand threads.

  5. Remove the ring gear bolts. Discard the bolts.
    NOTE: Refer to RING GEAR REMOVAL NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
  6. Remove the ring gear from the differential. Drive the gear off with a brass drift if necessary.
