Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Install the scan tool. Start the engine. Use the scan tool in order to monitor the engine speed. Does the engine speed fluctuate (up to twice the desired RPM)? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  4.
  3. Replace the crankshaft position sensor. After repairs, go to step  10.
  4. NOTE: The camshaft retard reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM.
  5. Perform the camshaft retard offset test procedure as follows:
    • Install the scan tool.
    • Start the engine.
    • Raise the engine speed to 1000 RPM.
    • Monitor the camshaft retard with the scan tool.

    Is the camshaft retard reading -2 to 2 degrees? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6.

  6. Note the camshaft retard reading from the previous step. Raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM. Does the camshaft retard reading change more than 2 degrees? If yes, go next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  7. With the engine at operating temperature and the engine OFF, perform the following procedure:
    • Remove the distributor cap.
    • Grasp the distributor rotor and gently attempt to rotate the rotor.

    Does the rotor turn on the distributor shaft? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to next step.

  8. Check for proper installation of the distributor. Repair as necessary. Did you find a problem? If problem was found, go to step  10. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  9. Perform the Camshaft Retard Offset adjustment procedure as follows:
    • With the engine OFF slightly loosen the distributor hold down bolt.
    • Start the engine and raise the engine speed to 1000 RPM.
    • Using the scan tool monitor the camshaft retard offset.
    • Rotate the distributor as follows:
      1. To compensate for a negative reading rotate the distributor in the counterclockwise direction.
      2. To compensate for a positive reading rotate the distributor in the clockwise direction.
    • Rotate distributor until 0 degrees offset is obtained.
    • When 0 degrees has been obtained turn OFF the ignition and tighten the distributor hold down bolt.

    Did you obtain 0° camshaft retard? If yes, go to step  10. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  10. Replace the distributor. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  12. Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
