Crankshaft Balancer Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Tools Required

Important:

  1. Install the J 42847  to the starter bolt holes.

    Tighten

    Tighten the J 42847  bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

Important:  Apply grease or clean engine oil to the inside of the crankshaft balancer or the end of the crankshaft, to prevent galling during assembly.

  2. Install the balancer onto the end of the crankshaft.

Important:  Apply the lubricant that comes with J 42845 each time the tool is used. Failure to lubricate J 42845 may prevent the balancer from installing completely.

  3. Use the J 42845  in order to install the balancer.
NOTE: Ensure the crankshaft balancer is installed to the proper depth. The crankshaft balancer nose must be seated against the crankshaft sprocket. Failure to install the crankshaft balancer properly may result in improper torque to the crankshaft balancer bolt. An improperly torqued crankshaft balancer bolt may loosen causing serious engine damage.
  4. Tighten the J 42845  until the crankshaft balancer is completely seated against the crankshaft sprocket.
