Removal (M/T)

  1. Remove transmission. See appropriate CLUTCHES article in TRANSMISSIONS. Remove starter. See appropriate STARTERS article in 2002 STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. Remove clutch. See appropriate CLUTCHES article in TRANSMISSIONS.
  2. Install Flywheel Holding Tool (J-44643) to starter opening in order to hold flywheel. The dual mass flywheel may require re-indexing in order to access flywheel to crankshaft bolts through secondary ring of flywheel.
  3. In order to access flywheel to crankshaft bolts re-index dual mass flywheel, install 2 bolts into clutch pressure plate mounting holes 180 degrees apart. Do not use clutch pressure plate bolts. Use a bolt of correct thread and a length that protrudes enough to use a pry bar. Using a long pry bar turn secondary ring of dual mass flywheel clockwise until flywheel mounting bolts can be accessed. It may require to turn secondary ring past bolt holes in order to compensate spring tension.
  4. Loosen flywheel mounting bolts and discard. Remove Flywheel Holding Tool (J-44643). Remove flywheel. Remove pilot bearing from flywheel using a hammer and a punch. The pilot bearing is removed from crankshaft side of flywheel.
