Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

CAUTION: When inspecting or replacing exhaust system components, make sure there is adequate clearance from all points on underbody to prevent overheating on the floor pan and possible damage to the passenger compartment insulation and trim materials.

Install the following components to the exhaust manifold rear pipe:
1. 1.1. Position a NEW exhaust manifold pipe seal (4) and the exhaust manifold flange seal retainer (5) to the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange.
2. 1.2. Insert the two retaining bolts (3) through the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange and into the exhaust manifold flange seal retainer (5).
3. 1.3. Finger tighten the two retaining bolts (3) in order to retain the pipe seal (4) and retainer (5).
4. 1.4. Position a NEW gasket (1) to the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange.
5. 1.5. Insert the two retaining bolts (2) through the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange and into the gasket (1).
Insert the exhaust manifold rear pipe around the exhaust manifold front pipe and up to the right exhaust manifold.
CAUTION: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .
Install the two bolts (2) attaching the exhaust manifold rear pipe to the right exhaust manifold.
Tighten
1. 3.1. Tighten the 2 right exhaust manifold rear pipe to right exhaust manifold bolts to 40 N.m (30 ft lbs).
2. 3.2. Tighten the 2 left exhaust manifold rear pipe to exhaust manifold flange seal retainer bolts to 25 N.m (18 ft lbs).

Place a NEW catalytic converter gasket over the catalytic converter studs.
CAUTION: Do not over-flex or damage the flex decoupler joint when moving the flex decoupler joint from normal mounting position. The flex decoupler joint will flex a maximum of six degrees which is equivalent to the pipes connected at the joint which move 1 inch for each foot length of pipe. A three foot pipe would move a maximum of three inches.
Position the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold rear pipe.
Install the four nuts in order to secure the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold rear pipe.
Tighten

Tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 25 N.m (18 ft lbs).

Lower the vehicle.
