Installation Procedure

- Make sure to align the marks made at removal.
Install the intermediate shaft (1) to the steering gear stub shaft.
CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. - Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering gear stub shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering gear stub shaft to 61 N.m (45 lb ft).
- Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
- Install the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).
Important: Make sure the upper cover to the steering column is inside the intermediate shaft cover.
- Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering column (1).
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to the steering column to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
- Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower access hole.
