Brake Shoes: Removal

- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the tire and the wheel. Install the pin into the park brake lever. See DISABLING THE PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER .
- Remove the rear brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM .
- Remove the rear brake shoe return springs. Remove the hold-down springs. Remove the hold-down pins. Remove the shoe guide. See Fig 1 .
- Remove the rear brake shoe actuator and the spring. Remove the rear brake shoe actuator link. See Fig 1 .
- Remove the rear parking brake lever strut and spring. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster spring. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster. Remove the rear brake shoes. See Fig 1 .
- Inspect all of the parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace as needed. Inspect all of the parts for signs of wear. Replace as needed.
- Inspect the rear brake cylinder for signs of leakage. If any is found, replace. See WHEEL CYLINDER . Inspect the rear brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance. See DRUM BRAKE COMPONENT INSPECTION .
