Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Sierra, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool to record the freeze frame and failure records. Using the CLEAR INFO function erases the freeze frame and failure records from the PCM. Record the freeze frame and failure records. Clear the DTCs. Were DTCs P0753 or P1860 also set? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 4.
- Inspect the transmission fuse. If you find an open fuse, inspect the following components for a short to ground:
- Off/Run/Crank Voltage Circuit (1020)
- 1-2 Shift Solenoid
- 2-3 Shift Solenoid
- TCC PWM Solenoid
- Transmission Wiring Harness Assembly
Repair the circuit or solenoid, or replace the harness if necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 17. If not, go to next step.
- Using the scan tool output control function, command the 2-3 shift solenoid valve on and off 3 times while listening to the bottom of the transmission pan. Use a stethoscope if needed. Does the solenoid click when commanded? If so, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If not, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect the transmission in-line 20-way harness connector. Additional DTCs will set. Install the Jumper Harness (J-44152) on the engine side of transmission harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Connect a 12-volt test light from the jumper harness terminal "E" to ground. Does the test light illuminate? If so, go to step 7. If not, go to next step.
- Repair the open or high resistance in the Off/Run/Crank voltage circuit (1020) of the 2-3 shift solenoid valve. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 17.
- Install the test light between jumper harness terminals "E" and "B". Using the scan tool, command the 2-3 shift solenoid valve on and off 3 times. Does the test light illuminate when you command the shift solenoid on, and turn off when you command the shift solenoid off? If so, go to step 10. If not, go to next step.
- Test the 2-3 shift solenoid valve control circuit (1223) for an open or short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 17. If not, go to next step.
- Replace the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to step 17.
- Turn ignition off. Install jumper harness on the transmission side of the 20-way connector. With a DVOM and the Connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A), measure the resistance between terminals "B" and "E". Does the resistance measure 19-31 ohms? If so, go to step 12. If not, go to next step.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the 2-3 shift solenoid valve. Measure the resistance of the 2-3 shift solenoid valve. Does the resistance measure 19-31 ohms? If so, go to step 15. If not, go to step 16.
- Measure the resistance between terminal "B" and a good ground. Does the resistance measure greater than 250 k/ohms? If so, go to step 14. If not, go to next step.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the 2-3 shift solenoid valve. Measure the resistance from the component's terminals to ground. Do both readings measure greater than 250 k/ohms? If so, go to step 15. If not, go to step 16.
- Measure the resistance between jumper harness terminal "B" and all other terminals, except terminals "A", "E", and "S". Is the resistance between terminal "B" and any other terminal, except terminals "A", "E", and "S", less than 250 k/ohms? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Replace the transmission internal wiring harness assembly. See TRANSMISSION INTERNAL WIRING HARNESS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to next step.
- Replace the 2-3 shift solenoid valve. See SOLENOID VALVES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to next step.
- Perform the following procedure to verify the repair:
- Select DTC.
- Select CLEAR INFO.
- Select the parameters 2-3 SOLENOID, 2-3 SOLENOID OPEN/SHORT TO GND, and 2-3 SOLENOID SHORT TO VOLTS.
- Operate the vehicle.
- The PCM commands the 2-3 shift solenoid valve on, and the 2-3 SOLENOID SHORT TO VOLTS is "NO".
- The PCM commands the 2-3 shift solenoid valve off, and the 2-3 SOLENOID OPEN/SHORT TO GND is "NO".
- All conditions met for 5 seconds.
- Select SPECIFIC DTC.
- Enter DTC P0758.
Has the test run and passed? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 1.
