Possible Causes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mazda 3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Open or short circuit in wiring harness between left side air bag and SAS control module, left side air bag malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.
- Inspect left side air bag
Using scan tool, inspect resistance for PID/DATA monitor DS-AB. See PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is 1.4-3.2 ohms, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is not 1.4-3.2 ohms, go to next step. - Inspect left side air bag connector
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove left side air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect left side air bag module connector. If left side air bag module connector is damaged, replace wiring harness. If left side air bag module connector is not damaged, go to next step. - Isolate malfunction
Connect leads of 2 ohm resistor across terminals of left side air bag module 2-pin connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTCs B1047, B1992, B1993, B1994 and/or B1995 are retrieved, go to next step. If DTCs B1047, B1992, B1993, B1994 and/or B1995 are not retrieved, replace left side air bag module. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. - Inspect SAS control module
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. Remove steering column cover and disconnect clockspring connector. Remove glove compartment and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors. Disconnect right and left front seat connectors. Disconnect right and left curtain air bag module connectors. Access SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check circuits for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2B and left side air bag connector terminal "A", and SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2F and left side air bag connector terminal "B". See Figure & Fig 1 . If faults are found in circuits, replace air bag system wiring harness. If faults are not found in circuits, replace SAS control module.
