Possible Causes

Passenger-side air bag (PAD) indicator circuit malfunction can be caused by open or short circuit in wiring harness between PAD indicator and SAS control module, open circuit in wiring harness between battery and PAD indicator, PAD indicator malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.

1. Inspect operation of PAD indicator
   
   Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe PAD indicator. If PAD indicator illuminates, go to next step. If PAD indicator does not illuminate, go to step  6 .
2. Inspect fuse
   
   Remove SAS 10-amp fuse and inspect fuse. If fuse in okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse.
3. Inspect battery
   
   Measure battery voltage. If battery voltage is 9-16 volts, go to next step. If battery is not 9-16 volts, diagnose battery or charging system malfunction.
4. Inspect wiring harness between PAD indicator & battery
   
   Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and PAD indicator connector terminal "A". See Figure . If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, repair wiring harness between PAD indicator & battery.
5. Inspect PAD indicator
   
   Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect one end of jumper wire to PAD indicator connector terminal "A" and other end of jumper wire to ground. Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe PAD indicator. If PAD indicator illuminates, go to next step. If PAD indicator does not illuminate, replace air bag system wiring harness.
6. Inspect wiring harness between PAD indicator & SAS control module
   
   Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove steering column cover and disconnect clockspring connector. Remove glove compartment and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors. Disconnect right and left front seat connectors. Disconnect right and left curtain air bag module connectors. Access SAS control module and disconnect connectors. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1G and PAD indicator connector terminal "B". See Figure & Figure . If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace air bag system wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, replace SAS control module.
