Draining & Refilling
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for vehicle on opposite end from which components are being removed.
WARNING:
Saturn ATF (P/N 21005966 & 21019223), and DEXRON-III ATF are not compatible with this transaxle. This transaxle uses Saturn Transaxle Fluid (P/N 22688912) only.
- Position vehicle on hoist and raise vehicle. Remove lower tube plug. See Figure . Remove lower tube assembly and drain fluid. See Fig 1 . Allow at least 5 minutes for fluid to drain completely. Install lower tube assembly. Tighten transaxle lower tube assembly to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Temporarily install original lower tube plug. Do not torque plug. Lower vehicle. Add a range of 6-7 Qts. of Saturn Transaxle Fluid (P/N 22688912) to unit. Install Scan tool. Start vehicle. Vehicle must be level. Perform the following:
- Shift transaxle from Park to Reverse for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle from Reverse to Drive for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle back to Park (engine should remain running).
- Raise vehicle. Remove lower tube plug and discard. If oil drains down at a steady stream from opening, wait for it to stop. If oil does not drain down from opening, add oil to transaxle until it starts to drain at a steady stream. Then stop adding immediately. Install new lower tube plug, and wipe away any excess fluid from transaxle. Tighten lower tube pug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower vehicle.
- Using scan tool, record TRANS FLUID TEMP. If transmission fluid temp is 68°F (20°) or below, fluid level is okay. If transmission fluid temp is 86°F (30°C) add 0.1 liter of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug. If transmission fluid temp is 104°F (40°C) add 0.2 liter of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug. If transmission fluid temp is 122°F (50°C) or above, add 0.3 liter of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug. Turn off vehicle.
