Checking Fluid Levels

WARNING:
Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for vehicle on opposite end from which components are being removed. Transaxle fluid is hot. Caution must be taken to prevent personal injury in the event transaxle fluid does drain from plug hole after plug is removed.
WARNING:
Saturn ATF (P/N 21005966 & 21019223), and DEXRON-III ATF are not compatible with this transaxle. This transaxle uses Saturn Transaxle Fluid (P/N 22688912) only.
NOTE:
The VT25E transaxle is not equipped with a dipstick.
- Install Scan tool. Start vehicle. Perform the following:
- Shift transaxle from Park to Reverse for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle from Reverse to Drive for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle back to Park.
- Set transaxle to the following conditions:
- Engine speed at idle or 800 RPM.
- Access line PC solenoid control and increase commanded amperage to maximum to produce minimum line pressure.
- Shift selector to Park.
- Raise vehicle. Vehicle must be level, with engine running. Remove lower tube plug and discard. See Fig 1 . If oil drains down at a steady stream from opening, wait for it to stop and go to next step. If oil does not drain down from opening, add Saturn Transaxle Fluid (P/N 22688912) to transaxle until it starts to drain at a steady stream, then stop adding immediately.
- Replace lower tube plug with new lower tube plug and wipe away any excess fluid from transaxle. Tighten transaxle lower tube plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- On scan tool, record TRANS. FLUID TEMP. If transaxle fluid temperature is 68°F (20°C) or below, fluid level is okay. If transaxle fluid temperature is 86°F (30°C) add 0.1L of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug. If transaxle fluid temperature is 104°F (400°C) add 0.2L of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug. If transaxle fluid temperature is 122°F (50°C) or above, add 0.3L of oil to transaxle. Do not remove plug.
