Test B: Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

  1. If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to START position. Did the starter solenoid click? If so, go to next step. If not, go to TEST A: STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK .
  3. Inspect the engine and belt drive system for mechanical binding, such as a seized engine or generator. Does the engine move freely? If so, go to next step. If not, go to ENGINE WILL NOT CRANK - CRANKSHAFT WILL NOT ROTATE in appropriate FAULT ISOLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Test the battery positive cable between the battery and the starter for high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  5. Test the ground circuit between the battery and the starter motor for a high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  6. Inspect for poor connections at the starter. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  7. Replace the Starter. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacement is complete, go to next step.
  8. Operate the system for which the symptom occurred. Did you correct the condition? If so, then system is okay. If not, go to step  2.
