Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Did you perform the Hydraulic Brake Diagnostic System Check? If so go to next step. If not, go to HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Observe the Red brake indicator. Does the Red brake indicator illuminate briefly during the bulb check? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  12 .
  3. Apply the park brake. Does the Red brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  4. Turn OFF the ignition. Release the park brake. Disconnect the brake fluid level switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit of the brake fluid level switch and the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. Does the Red Brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to step  10 . If not, go to step  7 .
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Release the park brake. Disconnect the park brake switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit of the park brake switch and a good ground. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. Does the Red Brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to step  9 . If not, go to next step.
  6. Test the signal circuit of the park brake switch for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to step  11 .
  7. Test the signal circuit of the brake fluid level switch for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to next step.
  8. Test the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch for a high resistance or an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to step  12 .
  9. Inspect for poor connections or a poor case ground at the park brake switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to step  13 .
  10. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the brake fluid level switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to step  14 .
  11. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the Body Control Module (BCM). Did you find and correct the condition? If so go to  17 . If not, go to step  15 .
  12. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to step  16 .
  13. Replace the park brake switch. See BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to  17 .
  14. Replace the brake fluid level switch. See MASTER CYLINDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to  17 .
  15. Replace the BCM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  16. Replace the EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE (EBCM) REPLACEMENT in appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM article. After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  17. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, system is okay. If system is not okay, go to  2 .
