Rear Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the brake drum. See REAR BRAKE DRUM  .
  2. Remove the adjuster spring. Use the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover (J-38400) to spread the top of the brake shoes to remove the adjuster assembly and the adjuster lever from the brake shoe. See Figure .
  3. Position the hook end of the brake shoe spanner under the universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out of the shoe web hole. Hold the universal spring while removing the brake shoe. See Figure .
  4. Position the hook end of the brake shoe spanner under the other universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out of the shoe web hole. Hold the universal spring while removing the brake shoe. See Figure .
  5. Disconnect the park brake lever from the brake shoe by removing the retaining clip.
