Axle Shaft: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
NOTE:
Required Tools: Slide Hammer (J-2619-01) and Axle Shaft Remover (J-45341).
- Apply parking brake. Raise vehicle on a hoist. Remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove cotter pin and lock cap. Remove and discard axle shaft nut. Release parking brake. Remove suspension knuckle. See KNUCKLE in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION under appropriate REAR SUSPENSION article. Using slide hammer and axle shaft remover remove rear axle shaft from vehicle.
