Axle Shaft: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to move vehicle with axle(s) removed from wheel bearing. Wheel(s) could fall off, dropping vehicle to the ground and causing personal injury or damage to the vehicle.
NOTE: Required Tools: Slide Hammer (J-2619-01), Axle Shaft Remover Extension (J-29794), Axle Shaft Puller (J-33008-A), Front Axle Shaft Removal Tool (J-46009) and Hub Spindle Remover (J-42129).
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the engine under cover.
  2. Using a punch and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the lock nut. Remove the drive shaft lock nut. Remove the wheel speed sensor wire and brake hose retainer from the strut assembly.
  3. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle. See Fig 1 . Disconnect the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. See OUTER TIE ROD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate MANUAL & POWER STEERING article.
  4. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. See LOWER BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article.
  5. Using a plastic hammer, disengage the axle shaft from the wheel hub and bearing and support the axle shaft. Using Front Axle Shaft Removal Tool and Slide Hammer remove the left side axle shaft from the transaxle.
    NOTE: On AWD models, the transfer case and transaxle must be drained before removing the right hand drive shaft. If the right hand drive shaft is removed without draining the fluids, the fluids will mix and contaminate both components.
  6. Drain the transaxle and transfer case. Using Front Axle Shaft Removal Tool and Slide Hammer remove the right side axle shaft from the transaxle. On AWD models, remove the bearing lock bolt. See Fig 2 .
  7. Using pliers in order to remove the snap ring and drive shaft from the vehicle. See Fig 2 . Remove the right hand axle shaft from the vehicle. Remove and discard the axle shaft retaining ring.
