Axle Shaft: Installation

  1. Install a NEW axle shaft retaining ring. See Figure . On AWD models, set the snap ring on the right hand drive shaft with the opening facing downward. Install the axle shaft to the transaxle.
  2. Push the axle shaft into transaxle until the retaining ring is fully seated. Verify that the axle shaft retaining ring is properly seated. Grasp the inner (tripod) housing. Pull the inner (tripod) housing outboard. DO NOT pull on the axle shaft bar. The axle shaft will remain in place when the retaining ring is properly seated.
  3. On AWD models, install the bearing lock bolt. Tighten the bearing lock bolt to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the axle shaft to the wheel hub and bearing.
  4. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. See BALL JOINT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate FRONT SUSPENSION article. Connect the outer tie rod end assembly to the steering knuckle. See OUTER TIE ROD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate MANUAL & POWER STEERING article.
  5. Install a NEW axle shaft nut. Insert a drift or a flat-bladed tool through the caliper and into the brake rotor to prevent the rotor from turning. Tighten the axle shaft nut to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Using a punch and hammer, stake the locknut. Install the wheel speed sensor. Tighten the wheel speed sensor retaining bolt to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Install the engine under cover. Tighten bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . On AWD models, inspect the transfer case fluid level. Lower the vehicle. Inspect the transaxle fluid level.
