Reduced Brake Power Message Displayed: 2003

  1. Did you review the brake warning system description and operation and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM  under GENERAL DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Inspect the brake assist system for proper operation. See BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect the supplemental brake assist connector. Turn the ignition to the Run position. Use a DMM in order to test for voltage on the supplement brake assist signal circuit Is there voltage on the supplemental brake assist signal circuit? If yes, go to step  5. If no, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect the instrument panel cluster connector. Test the supplemental brake assist signal circuit for an open or a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to step  6.
  5. Connect the supplemental brake assist connector. Disconnect the instrument panel cluster connector. Connect a DMM from battery positive voltage to the supplemental brake assist signal circuit Turn the ignition to the Run position while watching the DMM. Does the DMM flash battery voltage? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Replace instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repair, go to step  8.
  7. Replace the supplemental brake assist pump motor assembly. See SUPPLEMENT BRAKE ASSIST PUMP MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Start the engine. Does the REDUCED BRAKE POWER message stay on? If yes, go to step  2. If no, system is okay
