Installation (2500 & 3500 Series)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 12 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, and 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the backing plate to the axle housing flange.
  2. Install the backing plate nuts. See Figure. Tighten the backing plate bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  3. Install the park brake shoe. See PARK BRAKE SHOES .
  4. Install the axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the appropriate DIFFERENTIALS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  5. Adjust the park brake shoe. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  6. Install the rotor. See BRAKE ROTOR .
  7. Install the park brake cable to the lever.
  8. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    1. Compress the spring by pushing towards the lever.
    2. Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
    3. Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place.
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Lower vehicle.
  11. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. See ENABLING PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  under PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT in ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
