Without Daytime Running Lights

NOTE: The brake warning indicator illuminates when ground is applied to the brake warning indicator control circuit.
  1. Did you review the brake warning system description and operation and perform the necessary inspections? If so, proceed to next step. If not, see HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM  under GENERAL DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLESHOOTING.
  2. Turn off the ignition. Ensure the park brake is released. Turn on the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, test for intermittent and poor conditions. If not, proceed to next step.
  3. Install a scan tool. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR CURRENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTC C0286 and any other ABS disabling DTC? If so, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate ATI-LOCK article. If not, proceed to next step.
  4. NOTE: Ground is applied to the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit if the scan tool displays ON.
  5. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR DATA DISPLAY function on the scan tool. Observe the BRAKE WARNING LAMP COMMAND. Does the scan tool display ON? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step  8 .
  6. NOTE: This step tests for a shorted brake pressure differential switch.
  7. Disconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. See COMBINATION VALVE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step  14 . If not, proceed to next step.
  8. NOTE: This step tests if the EBCM is applying ground to the brake warning indicator.
  9. Turn off the ignition. Reconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. Disconnect the 10-way EBCM harness connector. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. Turn on the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step  11 . If not, proceed to next step.
  10. Repair the short to ground in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. When complete, go to step  15 .
  11. NOTE: This step tests for a shorted park brake warning lamp switch.
  12. Disconnect the park brake warning lamp switch harness connector. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step  13 . If not, proceed to next step.
  13. Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the instrument panel cluster harness connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Connect a test light between the battery positive voltage circuit and the brake warning indicator control circuit. Turn on the ignition. Does the test light remain illuminated? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step  12 .
  14. Repair the short to ground in the brake warning indicator control circuit. When complete, go to step  15 .
  15. Replace the EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. Use the scan tool in order to perform tire size calibration. When complete, go to step  15 .
  16. Replace the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. When complete, go to step  15 .
  17. Replace the park brake warning lamp switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, go to step  15 .
  18. Replace the brake pressure differential switch. See COMBINATION VALVE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, go to step  15 .
  19. Turn off the ignition for 5 seconds. Turn on the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, the system is okay. If not, go to step  3 .
