With Daytime Running Lights

NOTE:
The brake warning indicator illuminates when ground is applied to the brake warning indicator control circuit.
- Did you review the brake warning system description and operation and perform the necessary inspections? If so, proceed to next step. If not, see HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM under GENERAL DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLESHOOTING.
- Turn off the ignition. Ensure the park brake is released. Turn on the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, test for intermittent or poor conditions. If not, proceed to next step.
- Install a scan tool. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR CURRENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTC C0286 and any other ABS disabling DTC? If so, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. If not, proceed to next step.
- Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR DATA DISPLAY function on the scan tool. Observe the BRAKE WARNING LAMP COMMAND. Does the scan tool display on? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 8 .
- Disconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. See COMBINATION VALVE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step 20 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Turn off the ignition. Reconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. Disconnect the 10-way EBCM harness connector. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. Turn on the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step 16 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Repair the short to ground in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Disconnect the park brake warning lamp switch harness connector. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, go to step 18 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Turn off the ignition. Remove the DRL control module circuit board. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Open the DRL module cover. Remove the DRL module circuit board from the module using a suitable tool. Turn on the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn off? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 14 .
- Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the ignition switch harness connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Test the park brake switch signal circuit (ignition switch side) for a short to ground. Is the park brake switch signal circuit shorted to ground within the ignition switch? If so, go to step 19 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Reconnect the ignition switch harness connector. Test both of the park brake switch signal circuits for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 21 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Test the brake warning indicator control circuit for a short to ground between the DRL control module circuit board and the underhood fuse block. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 21 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Replace the DRL control module circuit board. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Open the DRL module cover. Remove the DRL module circuit board from the module using a suitable tool. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Turn off the ignition. Remove the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Connect a test light between the battery positive voltage circuit and the brake warning indicator control circuit at the instrument panel cluster harness connector. Turn on the ignition. Does the test light remain illuminated? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 17 .
- Repair the short to ground in the brake warning indicator control circuit. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Replace the EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. Use the scan tool in order to perform the tire size calibration. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Replace the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Replace the park brake warning lamp switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Replace the ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMN article in STEERING. When complete, go to step 21 .
- Replace the brake pressure differential switch. See COMBINATION VALVE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, proceed to next step.
- Turn off the ignition for 5 seconds. Turn on the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 3 .
WARNING:
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be off, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
NOTE:
The Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) module circuit board is enclosed in a plastic case under the left side of the instrument panel.
