Removal (Rear)

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.
  6. Compress the rear caliper piston. See Figure .
    1. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.
    2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the piston pushes into the caliper bore enough to slide the caliper off the rotor.
    3. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.
  7. Remove the brake hose to caliper bolt. See Figure .
  8. Remove and discard the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper housing or the brake hose end.
    9. NOTE: Do not pinch off the brake hose with any tools.
  9. Plug the opening in the brake hose in order to prevent excessive brake fluid loss and contamination. See Figure .
  10. Remove the caliper lock mounting bolt.
  11. Remove the support key and the spring using a brass punch and a hammer to drive out the support key. See Figure .
  12. Remove the caliper assembly.
  13. Inspect the inside of the caliper assembly for signs of fluid leakage. See BRAKE CALIPER INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  14. Use a wire brush to remove any corrosion from the machined surfaces of the anchor plate and the caliper.
  15. Remove the brake pads from the caliper.
