Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Attempt to start the engine. Will the engine start? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data for this DTC. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC or as close to the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data that you observed. Does the DTC failed this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 5 .
- With the engine running, wiggle the electrical connectors of the following components and related circuits while listening for the engine to stumble:
- The PCM
- The CKP
Does the engine stumble? If yes, go to step 6 . If no, go to step 7 .
- Operate any non-engine related electronic component on the vehicle. Observe the Med. Resolution Resync Counter with the scan tool. Does the Med. Resolution Resync Counter on the scan tool increment while operating any non-engine related electronic components? If yes, go to step 9 . If no, go to step 4 .
- Turn OFF the ignition. Check for a poor electrical terminal connection or replace the terminal in the circuit which caused the engine to stumble. Repair the electrical connection or the terminal in the circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12 .
- Did the MIL illuminate in Step 3 ? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 12 .
- Turn OFF the ignition. Check the following items for rubbed-through wire insulation or for wiring being pinched:
- The PCM.
- The CKP sensor.
Repair the wiring as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12 . If no, go to step 10 .
- Turn OFF the ignition. Repair the circuitry of the malfunctioning or interfering component. Move any wiring that is causing the interference away from the CKP and the ICM wiring harness. After repairs, go to step 12 .
- Replace the CKP sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Idle the engine for 5 minutes, or until the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) turns ON. Did the MIL illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 12 .
- Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running DTC. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2 .
- Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
