Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative

- Did you review the brake warning system circuit description and perform SYMPTOMS - PARK BRAKE under TROUBLE SHOOTING? If so, go to next step. If not, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- With the ignition switch on, observe the brake warning indicator and perform a brake warning system test by meeting each of the conditions:
- Brake indicator should illuminate with the fluid level float manually held down.
- Brake indicator should illuminate with the parking brake applied.
- Brake indicator should illuminate with the ignition switch in START.
Did the brake indicator illuminate for each condition? If so, go to INTERMITTENT under SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If not, go to next step.
- Is the brake indicator completely inoperative in all conditions? If so, go to step 18 . If not, go to next step.
- Did the brake indicator illuminate with the float manually held down? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 7 .
- Did the brake indicator illuminate with the parking brake applied? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 10 .
- Did the brake indicator illuminate with the ignition switch in START? If so, go to INTERMITTENT under SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If not go to step 15 .
- Turn off the ignition. Release the park brake. Disconnect the brake fluid level switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit of the brake fluid level switch and the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch. Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Does the Red Brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 9 .
- Replace the brake fluid level switch, located in master cylinder reservoir. See MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step 19 .
- Test the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to step 17 .
- Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the park brake switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the signal circuit of the park brake switch and a good ground. Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Does the Red Brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 12 .
- Replace the park brake switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step 19 .
- Disconnect the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) control module connector. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the brake indicator control circuit and chassis ground. Turn on the ignition switch. Does the brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 17 .
- Test the park brake signal circuit for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to next step.
- Replace the DRL control module. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step 19 .
- Disconnect ignition switch connector C203. Test the ignition switch for continuity in the START position. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Is the ignition switch circuit continuous? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step 17 .
- Replace the ignition switch. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step 19 .
- Test the control circuit of the brake indicator for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 19 . If not, go to next step.
- Replace the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to next step.
- Operate the vehicle in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, then system okay. If system is not okay, go to step 3 .
