Master Cylinder: Disassembly

- Remove the brake master cylinder from the vehicle. See MASTER CYLINDER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove the 2 grommets. Remove the O-ring from the master cylinder bore. See Fig 1 . Secure the mounting flange of the brake master cylinder in a bench vise so that the rear of the primary piston is accessible. Clean the outside of the master cylinder.
- Push the piston into the master cylinder and remove the piston stopper bolt and the gasket. Push the piston into the master cylinder and remove the snap ring. Remove the following components from the master cylinder:
- The plate.
- The cylinder cup.
- The O-ring.
- The piston guide.
- The primary piston and spring.
- Remove the master cylinder from the vise. Place a rag and 2 wooden blocks on a table. Allow 3.94" (100 mm) between the top of the rag and the top of the blocks for the secondary piston. Tap the cylinder flange against the blocks in order to remove the secondary piston and spring. Wash the disassembled parts with clean brake fluid.
- Dry the parts with compressed air. Inspect the parts for wear or damage. Replace any worn or damaged parts. Inspect the master cylinder bore for scoring or corrosion. Replace a damaged master cylinder.
