Drum Brakes: Adjustment
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels and tires. Relieve cable tension from the park brake system at the equalizer. There should be not tension on the park brake cables, so that the brake shoes are positioned only by the adjuster strut.
- Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate. Hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjusting bolt. Using another screwdriver, reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the adjusting bolt.
- Remove the rear drums. See BRAKE DRUM under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Set the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage (J-21177-A) so that the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage contacts the inside diameter of the drum at the widest point. Position the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage over the shoes at the widest point. Turn the adjuster nut until the shoes just contact the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage.
- The outside diameter of the shoes and linings should be approximately 0.024" (0.6 mm) less than the diameter of the brake drum.
- Repeat for the other rear brake assembly. Install the rear drums. See BRAKE DRUM under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Install the rear wheels and tires. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust the park brake cable system. See DRUM PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT . Lower the vehicle.
