Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Did you review the Brake Warning System Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT - HYDRAULIC BRAKE  .
  2. Verify a fault is present. Does the system operate normally? If so, see INTERMITTENTS  under TROUBLESHOOTING. If not, go to next step.
  3. Install a scan tool. Select the INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu on the scan tool. Command the BRAKE LAMP ON. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  15 .
  4. Select INPUT 1 from the BODY CONTROL MODULE DATA DISPLAY menu on the scan tool. Set the park brake while observing the PARK BRAKE status on the scan tool. Does the PARK BRAKE status change from RELEASED to SET? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  6 .
  5. Disconnect the brake fluid level switch harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between the brake fluid level switch output circuit and the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step  12 . If not, go to step  7 .
  6. Disconnect the park brake switch harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between the park brake switch output circuit and a good ground. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step  11 . If not, go to step  8 .
  7. Connect a fused jumper wire between the brake fluid level switch output circuit and a good ground. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step  9 . If not, go to step  10 .
  8. Test park brake switch output circuit for an open between the park brake switch and the BCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  16 . If not, go to step  13 .
  9. Repair the open in the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch. After repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  10. Test the brake fluid level switch input circuit for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  16 . If not, go to step  14 .
  11. Replace the park brake switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  12. Replace the brake fluid level switch. See MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  13. Replace the BCM. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  14. Replace the EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULES (EBCM) REPLACEMENT in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. After repairs are complete, go to step  16 .
  15. Replace the instrument panel cluster. See appropriate GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANEL article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  16. Verify the system is repaired. Does the system operate normally? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step  3 .
