Brake Pedal Excessive Travel

- Were you sent here from SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKES under TROUBLE SHOOTING? If so, go to the next step. If not, go to STARTING POINT - HYDRAULIC BRAKES under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Inspect for proper brake pedal travel. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL MEASUREMENT AND INSPECTION under ADJUSTMENT & INSPECTION. Is the brake pedal travel distance within the acceptable limits? If so, go to step 5. If not, go to the next step.
- Inspect for worn, missing, misaligned, bent or damaged brake pedal system components.
- For the brake pedal pushrod component inspection, see BRAKE PEDAL PUSHROD INSPECTION under ADJUSTMENT & INSPECTION.
- Inspect the brake pedal bushings for excessive wear and/or damage and inspect the brake pedal for a bent and/or damaged condition.
- BRAKE PEDAL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (for pedal pushrod replacement).
- Reinspect for proper brake pedal travel. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL MEASUREMENT AND INSPECTION under ADJUSTMENT & INSPECTION. Is the brake pedal travel distance within the acceptable limits? If so, go to step 9. If not, go to the next step.
- Inspect the hydraulic brake system for proper operation. See HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS under SYSTEM TESTS. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step 9. If not, go to the next step.
- Inspect the drum brake system, if equipped, for proper operation. See DRUM BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS under SYSTEM TESTS. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step 9. If not, go to the next step.
- Inspect the disc brake system for proper operation. See DISC BRAKE SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS under SYSTEM TESTS. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step 9. If not, go to the next step.
- Inspect the brake assist system for proper operation. See BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS under SYSTEM TESTS. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to the next step. If not, go to STARTING POINT - HYDRAULIC BRAKES under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
- Road test the vehicle to confirm proper operation. See BRAKE SYSTEM VEHICLE ROAD TEST under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Is the condition still present? If so, go to step 2. If not, the system is okay.
