Rear Brake Shoes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
  2. Relieve cable tension from parking brake at the equalizer. There should be no tension on parking brake cables, so that brake shoes are positioned only by the adjuster strut.
  3. Remove rear drums. Set the Drum-To-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge (J-21177-A) so that gauge contacts the inside diameter of the drum at the widest point.
  4. Position gauge over the shoes at the widest point. Turn adjuster nut until shoes just contact the gauge. Repeat procedure for the other side of rear brake assembly.
  5. Install rear drums. Install rear wheels. Adjust parking brake cable system. See PARKING BRAKE  . Lower vehicle.
