Valve Rocker Arm Covers: Installation

  1. If removed, install PCV diaphragm, spring, cover, and screws. If removed, install NEW grommets for injector line fittings.
  2. Apply 1/8" (2-3 mm) wide to 1/16" (0.5-1.5 mm) high bead of Sealant (GM 97720043) to upper valve rocker arm cover sealing surface. Apply a bead of sealant to area under injector wire harness on lower valve rocker arm cover.
  3. Install upper valve rocker arm cover. Install upper valve rocker arm cover bolts. Use bolt tightening sequence. See Fig 1. Bolts No. 1 and 2 are used to position valve rocker arm cover. Tighten bolts to 71 INCH lbs. Install fuel injector lines.
  4. Connect PCV hose to upper valve rocker arm cover. Install bolts retaining fuel injection control module wiring harness bracket. Install bolts retaining fuel injection control module wiring harness connectors.
  5. Connect fuel injection control module wiring harness connectors. Install fuel injection control module wiring harness to retainer. Install water outlet tube. Install glow plug relay bracket. Install auxiliary generator, if equipped.
  6. Connect fuel hoses. Push in until locked. Install nut retaining fuel hose bracket to valve rocker arm cover. Position generator positive cable. Install generator positive cable in clip on engine front cover. Install generator positive cable and retaining nut to generator.
  7. Install battery positive cable junction block bracket and bolt to power steering pump. Install charged air cooler inlet duct to turbocharger charge air cooler outlet. Align marks on hose and intake manifold duct. Install upper intake manifold sight shield. Fill engine coolant. See DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM . Connect battery negative cable.

  1. If removed, install PCV diaphragm, spring, and screws. Tighten screws to 35 INCH lbs. (4 N.m). If removed, install NEW grommets for injector line fittings. Apply a 1/8" (2-3 mm) wide to 1/16" (0.5-1.5 mm) high bead of Sealant (GM 97720043) to upper valve rocker arm cover sealing surface. Apply a bead of sealant to area under injector wire harness on lower valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install upper valve rocker arm cover. Install upper valve rocker arm cover bolts. Use bolt tightening sequence. Bolts No. 1 and 2 are used to position valve rocker arm cover. Tighten bolts to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m) in sequence shown. Tighten bolts again to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m) in sequence. See Figure.
  3. Install fuel injector lines. Connect PCV hoses to upper valve rocker arm cover. Position outlet heater hose. Install fuel filter mounting bolts., fuel injection control module, and bolt retaining heater hose bracket to generator bracket.
  4. Remove tape from charged air cooler outlet duct to charge air cooler pipe opening and intake manifold tube opening. Position hose on pipe and intake manifold tube. The hose is marked ENG for intake manifold tube end and DUCT for pipe end. Install clamps and position as shown in order to allow proper clearances.
  5. Install air cleaner outlet duct to air cleaner. Install charged air cooler inlet duct to turbocharger. Align duct to turbocharger as shown. Position hose clamps. Install upper intake manifold sight shield.


  1. Install lower valve rocker arm cover gasket in lower valve rocker arm cover, and bolt grommets in lower valve rocker arm cover. Install lower valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install 12 bolts for lower valve rocker arm cover. The lower valve rocker arm cover is tightened 2 times in numerical order. Bolts No. 1 and 2 are used to position cover. Tighten lower valve rocker arm cover bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in proper sequence. Retighten lower valve rocker arm cover bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in proper sequence. See Fig 1.
  3. Install injector harnesses. Install injector harness bracket bolts. Install injector wire terminals and nuts to injectors. Connect injector wiring harnesses connectors. Install upper left valve rocker arm cover.

  1. Install gasket in lower valve rocker arm cover. Install bolt grommets in lower valve rocker arm cover. Install lower valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install 12 bolts for lower valve rocker arm cover. The lower valve rocker arm cover is tightened 2 times in numerical order. Bolts No. 1 and 2 are used to position cover. Tighten lower valve rocker arm cover to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in proper sequence. Retighten lower valve rocker arm cover bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) in proper sequence. See Figure.
  3. Install injector harnesses. Install injector harness bracket bolts. Install injector wire terminals and nuts to injectors. Connect injector wiring harnesses connectors. Install right upper valve rocker arm cover.
