Circuit Description
Passenger Presence System (PPS) is used to monitor weight of an occupant on front outboard passenger seat and communicate status to SDM whether to enable or suppress passenger-side air bag module deployment. PPS consists of an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), silicone filled sensor pad (PPS bladder), pressure sensor, seat belt tension retractor sensor, wiring harness and PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators, located on rear view mirror. Weight of seat occupant is measured as a pressure change within bladder by pressure sensor. Pressure sensor sends a signal to PPS ECU.
If pressure from occupants weight is less than a specified value, PPS ECU will send a suppress signal to SDM to disable passenger-side air bag module deployment loop. If pressure from occupants weight is more than a specified value, PPS ECU will send an enable signal to SDM to enable passenger-side air bag module deployment loop. PPS will notify driver of enable/suppress status by turning on PASSENGER AIR BAG ON or OFF indicator, located on rear view mirror. PPS monitors itself for faults and will set a DTC if fault is detected. PPS will also notify SDM of fault. SDM will respond by setting either DTC B0092 or B0098 and requesting Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to turn on AIR BAG warning light.
