Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR Diagnostic System Check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect passenger-side front end discriminating sensor connector. See FRONT END DISCRIMINATING SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If front end discriminating sensor side of connector shows signs of damage, poor connections or corrosion, replace passenger-side front end discriminating sensor. If harness side of connector shows signs of signs of damage, poor connections or corrosion, replace harness connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8. If both sides of connector are okay, go to next step.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Flat WIre Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  3. Measure resistance of passenger-side front end discriminating sensor. See Figure. If resistance is about 820 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 820 ohms, go to step  6.
  4. Disconnect SDM connector. See Figure. If SDM connector shows signs of corrosion, poor connections or damage, replace connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  5. Inspect passenger-side front end discriminating sensor high-side and low-side circuits for an open or high resistance and a short to ground or voltage. See WIRE REPAIR . If condition is found and corrected, go to step  8. If condition is not found, go to step  7.
  6. Replace passenger-side front end discriminating sensor. Go to step  8.
  7. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all SIR components. Ensure all components are properly mounted. Using scan tool, clear all SIR DTC's. Road test vehicle. If DTC resets, go to step  2. If DTC does not reset, system is normal.
