Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. If IPC is functioning correctly, go to next step. If IPC is not functioning correctly, diagnose and repair IPC.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector. If SDM connector shows signs of damage, corrosion or poor connections, replace SDM connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  8. If SDM connector is okay, to to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector. Turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light is illuminated, go to step  7. If AIR BAG warning light is not illuminated, go to next step.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Flat WIre Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  5. Inspect AIR BAG warning light control circuit for an open or high resistance. If an open or high resistance is found and corrected, go to step  8. If an open or high resistance is not found, go to next step.
  6. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  8.
  7. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all SIR components. Road test vehicle. If condition is corrected, system is okay. If condition is not corrected, go to step  2.
