Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector, If SDM connector shows signs of damage, corrosion or poor connections, replace SDM connector. See WIRE REPAIR . If SDM connector is okay, go to next step.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Flat WIre Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  3. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on and wait at least 6 seconds. Measure AIR BAG warning light control circuit voltage at IPC connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Yellow wire). If voltage is more than 8 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 8 bolts or less, go to step  5.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM connector. Measure resistance between IPC connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If resistance is one meg ohm or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than one meg ohm, go to step  6.
  5. Replace IPC. Go to step  10.
  6. Repair short to ground in AIR BAG warning light circuit. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  10.
  7. Measure resistance of AIR BAG warning light indicator circuit. IF resistance is less than one ohm, go to step  9. If resistance is one ohm or more, go to next step.
  8. Repair open in AIR BAG warning light circuit. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  10.
  9. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  10. Reconnect all SIR components. Road test vehicle. If condition is corrected, system is okay. If condition is not corrected, go to step  2.
