Removal (Pickup)

NOTE:
Tank Removal Tool (J-45529) and Combustible Gas Detector (J-45878) are required for this procedure. See Figure
and Figure
.
- If the tank is being removed in order to replace the High Pressure Lock-Off (HPL) solenoid or for internal tank cleaning, perform the High Pressure Lock-Off (HPL) Solenoid Replacement instead of this procedure. See HIGH PRESSURE LOCK-OFF SOLENOID under SOLENOIDS. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . If the tank is to be discarded or shipped it must be vented. Venting will damage the HPL solenoid. See FUEL TANK VENTING PROCEDURE under FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable(s). Remove the fuel tank cover. See FUEL TANK COVER . Disconnect the electrical connectors at the High Pressure Lock-Off (HPL) solenoid as necessary. See Figure . Disconnect the high pressure regulator fuel inlet line. See Figure . Disconnect the fuel outlet line from the HPL solenoid. Disconnect the tee fitting from the HPL fitting.
- Disconnect the fuel line clips at the lower tank cover mounting bracket. See Figure . Disconnect the fuel line clips at the tank frame. Remove the fuel filter mounting bolts. Remove the fuel filter and line assembly from the vehicle. Remove the tank lower cover mounting bracket bolts. Set aside the mounting bracket assembly in order to gain access to the tank strap retaining nuts. Remove the tank upper cover mounting bracket bolts. Remove the upper tank cover mounting bracket.
- Remove the tank strap retaining nuts. See Figure . Remove the tank strap upper mounting clips and pins. Remove the tank straps from the vehicle. Place the Tank Removal Tool around the tank. Connect the Tank Removal Tool to a suitable lifting device and remove the tank from the vehicle.
