CAUTION: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.
NOTE: DO NOT handle the fuel sender assembly by the fuel pipes. The amount of leverage generated by handling the fuel pipes could damage the joints.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank. See FUEL TANK .
  2. CAUTION: Drain the fuel from the fuel sender assembly into an approved container in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury. Never store the fuel in an open container.
  3. Remove the retaining ring from the fuel sender assembly using Fuel Sender Lock Nut Wrench (J 39765). Remove the fuel sender assembly and the seal. See Fig 1. Discard the seal. Clean the fuel sender sealing surfaces.
  4. NOTE: The fuel strainer must be in a horizontal position when the fuel sender is installed in the tank. When installing the fuel sender assembly, assure that the fuel strainer does not block full travel of the float arm.
  5. Install the NEW seal on the fuel tank. Install the fuel sender assembly into the fuel tank. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  6. Turn ignition on for 2 seconds. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Turn ignition on. Inspect for fuel leaks. Install the engine cover.
