Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT:
  • All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.
  • DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  • The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.
  • If the oil fill tube has been removed from the rocker arm cover, install a NEW fill tube during assembly.

  1. Lubricate the O-ring seal of the NEW oil fill tube with clean engine oil.
  2. Insert the NEW oil fill tube into the rocker arm cover.

    Rotate the tube clockwise until locked in the proper position.

  3. Install the oil fill cap into the tube.

    Rotate the cap clockwise until locked in the proper position.

  5. Install a NEW rocker cover gasket (1) into the valve rocker cover lip.

  7. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.
  8. Install new rocker arm cover grommets, if necessary.
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
  9. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and grommets.

    Tighten:  Tighten the bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  11. Install the PCV hose to the throttle body and rocker cover.

  13. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382, Canada P/N 10953489, or equivalent to the threads of the bracket bolts.
  14. Install the ignition coils and bracket to the rocker arm cover.
  15. Install the ignition coil bracket studs to the rocker cover.

    Tighten:  Tighten the studs to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  17. If equipped with the 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L (LQ4) engine, perform the following:
    1. Install the heater hose bracket and nut.

      Tighten:  Tighten the nut to 9 N.m (80 lb in).

    2. Position the surge tank/heater hoses to the heater hose bracket.

  19. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  20. Position the engine harness, if necessary.
  21. Install the harness clips (2).
  22. Connect the main electrical connector (1) feeding the ignition coils.
  23. Install the CPA lock.
  24. Install the engine sight shield, if required. Refer to Engine Sight Shield Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L (LQ4))  or Engine Sight Shield Replacement (6.0L (LQ9)) .
