Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT:
If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters must also be replaced.
- Lubricate the camshaft journals and the bearings with clean engine oil.
- Install three M8-1.25 x 100 mm (M8-1.25 x 4.0 in) bolts to the bolt holes in the front of the camshaft.NOTE: All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.
- Using the bolts as a handle, carefully install the camshaft into the engine block.
- Remove the three bolts from the front of the camshaft.
- Install the camshaft retainer and bolts.
Tighten: Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Install the camshaft sprocket and position the timing chain.
- Install the camshaft sprocket bolts.
Tighten: Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
- Inspect the camshaft sensor O-ring seal. If the O-ring seal is not cut or damaged, it may be reused.
- Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
- Install the camshaft sensor and bolt.
Tighten: Tighten the camshaft sensor bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
- Install the front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
- Install the radiator support. Refer to RADIATOR SUPPORT REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
- Remove the hood hinge bolts from the service position (2).
- Lower the hood to the normal position.
- Install the hood hinge bolts.
Tighten: Tighten the hood hinge bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
IMPORTANT:
Install the retainer plate with the sealing gasket facing the engine block.
The gasket surface on the engine block should be clean and free of dirt and/or debris.
