Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  2. Remove the bolts that secure the lifter guides.

    Important:  Ensure that the lifter guides are identified so they can be installed in their original location and orientation.

  3. Remove the lifter guides.

  4. Remove the valve lifters from the lifter bore.
  5. Inspect the valve lifter for the following conditions:
    • Lifter wear
    • Lifter scuffing
    • Loose roller shaft
  6. Inspect the valve lifter bore in the engine block for wear and scuffing.
  7. Inspect the roller for freedom of movement.
  8. Inspect the roller surface for flat spots and pitting.
  9. Inspect the valve lifters and the valve lifter guide assemblies. Refer to VALVE LIFTERS AND GUIDES CLEANING AND INSPECTION .
  10. If a valve lifter requires replacement inspect the camshaft. Refer to CAMSHAFT AND BEARINGS CLEANING AND INSPECTION .
