Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Sonoma and 2002 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Important:  Install the NEW cylinder head gasket with the words THIS SIDE UP showing.

  1. Install the cylinder head gasket to the block.
  2. Use a socket to push the cylinder head gasket over the rear dowel pin.

  3. Carefully guide the cylinder head into place over the dowel pins. This operation may require an assistant.

  4. Install the cylinder head bolts by hand.

  5. Use the following sequence in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts:
    NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the long cylinder head bolts to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    • Tighten the short cylinder head bolts to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    1. 5.1. Tighten bolt 1 to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    2. 5.2. Tighten bolt 2 to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    3. 5.3. Tighten bolt 3 to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    4. 5.4. Tighten bolt 4 to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    5. 5.5. Tighten bolt 5 to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    6. 5.6. Tighten bolt 6 to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    7. 5.7. Tighten bolt 7 to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    8. 5.8. Tighten bolt 8 to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    9. 5.9. Tighten bolt 9 to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).
    10. 5.10. Tighten bolt 10 to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
    11. 5.11. Use J 36660-A  to tighten all the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees in sequence.

  7. Install the engine lift bracket onto the rear of the engine.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the engine lift bracket nut to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  9. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  11. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT .
  12. Install the accessory mounting bracket.
  13. Install the bolts holding the accessory mounting bracket to the engine.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the accessory mounting bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the thermostat assembly. Refer to THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT (2.2 L) or THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT (4.3 L) .
  15. Install the A/C compressor, if equipped. Refer to COMPRESSOR .
  16. Install the power steering pump. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (2.2L) or POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (4.3L) .
  17. Install the generator. Refer to GENERATOR .
  18. Install the fan pulley.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the fan pulley bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

  20. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  21. Install the engine cooling fan clutch. Refer to FAN CLUTCH REPLACEMENT .
  22. Fill the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  23. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
