Front Cover: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the batteries. Drain the cooling system. See DRAINING & FILLING COOLING SYSTEM  under ADJUSTMENTS. Remove the engine oil fill tube from the front cover. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER .
  2. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover. See WATER PUMP . Raise the vehicle. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the fuel injection pump. Remove the nuts retaining the injection pump to the engine front cover. The injection pump does not require removal.
  4. NOTE: Mark the fuel line clips, so that they can be re-installed on the proper stud.
  5. Remove the bolts from the front of the engine front cover. See Fig 1. Remove the bolts retaining the oil pan to the engine front cover. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. See Fig 2. Clean and inspect the sealing surface of the engine block.
