Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cables. Remove interior engine cover (if equipped). Drain cooling system. Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. See RECOVERY/EVACUATION & RECHARGING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in HVAC. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle. Remove the surge tank from then vehicle. Remove the air intake duct from the turbocharger. Remove the transmission oil level indicator. Remove the grille from the vehicle. Remove the air conditioning condenser from the vehicle. See CONDENSER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in MANUAL A/C HEATER SYSTEMS article.
  2. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Remove the timing chain from the camshaft and crankshaft. See TIMING CHAIN & SPROCKETS . Remove the oil pump drive from the engine block. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block. See HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS .
  3. Remove the thrust bearing and retainer from the engine block. Remove the camshaft from the engine block, use care as not to damage the camshaft bearing. Replace the key if damaged or has signs of excessive wear.
