Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION .
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  4. Remove the generator from the engine. Refer to GENERATOR .
  5. Install the engine support fixture J 28467-B  . Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  6. Loosen the A/C receiver pinch clamps.
  7. Lift the A/C receiver in order to access the right side engine mount.
  8. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  9. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder Head Cover Replacement .
  10. Set the number one piston to the top dead center position.

  11. Align the camshaft timing sprockets.
  12. Disconnect the power steering oil pressure switch connector.
  13. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE .
  14. Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - RIGHT .
  15. Remove the two power steering pump through bolts and the nuts (1).
  16. Remove the power steering pump from the mounting surface.

    Move the pump to the side.

  17. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  18. Remove the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt using J 8614-01  .

  19. Remove the following components:
    • The crankshaft position sensor bolt (5)
    • The sensor

  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Remove the following components from the mounting surface:
    • The drive belt tensioner bolt
    • The drive belt tensioner nut
    • The drive belt tensioner
  22. Remove the timing chain tensioner bolts (1, 2).
  23. Remove the timing chain tensioner.

  24. Remove the following fasteners:
    • The timing chain cover bolts (1-14)
    • The timing chain cover nuts (15)
  25. Remove the timing chain cover.
