Removal Procedure

- Remove the left engine splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - LEFT .
- Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - RIGHT .
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the engine cover.CAUTION: Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Disconnect the accelerator cable.
- Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Remove the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
- Remove the alternator. Refer to GENERATOR .
- Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Removal .
- Remove the exhaust pipe.
- Remove the exhaust manifold bracket nut and bolts.
- Remove the ignition coils. Refer to IGNITION COIL .
- Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
- Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hoses from the cylinder head cover.
- Remove the throttle body. Refer to THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY .
- Remove the fuel injectors. Refer to FUEL RAILS & FUEL INJECTORS .
- Remove 1 bolt and 1 nut from the accelerator cable bracket.
- Disconnect the ECT sensor and camshaft position sensor electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the VVT and the VVTL electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the oil pressure switch and 2 ground electrical connectors.
- Remove 2 bolts from the engine wire harness bracket.
- Remove the intake manifold insulator.
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
- Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR .
- Remove the ECT sensor. Refer to ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR .
- Remove the PCV valve and grommet. Refer to Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Replacement .
- Remove the intake camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Intake .
- Remove the exhaust camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Exhaust .
- Remove the bolt for the oil control valve.
- Remove the bolt, gasket and oil control valve filter.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water house union.
- Disconnect the heater hose from the water hose union.
- Remove the following items in sequence:
- 35.1. The cylinder head bolts
- 35.2. The cylinder head washers
- Remove the water bypass to cylinder block bolt.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove the following items.
- The upper exhaust manifold heat insulator bolts (1) and heat insulator.
- The exhaust manifold nuts (2) and bolts (3).
- The exhaust manifold (4) and gasket.
- The lower exhaust manifold heat insulator bolts (5) and heat insulator.
- Remove the cylinder head gasket (1).
- Clean the cylinder block mating surfaces.
- Clean the cylinder head mating surface.
- Clean the timing chain cover mating surface.
