Muffler Replacement: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Silverado.   1. If muffler was replaced, reinstall the old oxygen sensor.
  2. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the old oxygen sensor.
  3. Install oxygen sensor and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install insulators to muffler hangers.
  5. Install a new exhaust manifold pipe gasket.
  6. With the aid of an assistant, slide the muffler forward in order to install the muffler to the catalytic converter.
  7. Install insulators to the frame hangers.
  8. Install muffler nuts, until snug.
  9. Tighten exhaust pipe clamp bolt and muffler nuts. Tighten exhaust muffler nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten exhaust pipe clamp to specification.
  10. Connect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  11. Connect CPA retainer.
  12. Clip oxygen sensor connector to the support.
  13. Raise rear axle using adjustable jack stands.
  14. Install rear shock absorbers lower bolts and nuts. Tighten lower bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  15. Remove adjustable jack stands from under the rear axle.
  16. Connect vent hose swivel clip to the rear brake crossover pipe.
  17. Install rear axle vent hose to rear axle, if necessary.
  18. Install the left and right sensor link rods to the sensors. Using Hose Clamp Pliers (J-38185), install link rods to ball studs on sensor levers.
  19. Connect the chassis harness to the electronic suspension rear position sensor and rear shock.
  20. Install spare tire.
  21. Install oil pan skid plate and bolts, if necessary. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  22. Install rear wheels.
