Engine Front Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install a NEW crankshaft front oil seal using Front Cover Oil Seal Installer (J-42851).
  2. Lubricate sealing surface of the crankshaft front oil seal with clean engine oil.
  3. Apply Sealant GM (PN 12346286) in 2 places on engine block where the front cover meets the oil pan.
  4. Install engine front cover gasket into the front cover.
  5. Install front cover and gasket. Hold front cover up to crankshaft. Lift front cover while sliding the cover over crankshaft. Slide front cover towards engine block while keeping cover raised. Lower cover down over the dowel pin, allowing the front cover to rest on the sealant.
  6. Install engine front cover bolts, see Fig 2. Tighten cover bolts in sequence a first pass to specification. Tighten engine front cover bolts in sequence a final pass to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Position battery cable channel into place.
  8. Install battery cable channel bolt. Tighten battery cable channel bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  9. Inspect the CMP sensor O-ring for cuts, cracks, tears or damage. Replace as needed.
  10. Apply a light film of clean engine oil to the CMP sensor O-ring.
  11. Install CMP sensor. Install CMP sensor bolt. Tighten CMP sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Fig 1.
  12. Install engine harness clips to the battery cable channel.
  13. Connect CMP sensor electrical connector.
  14. Install crankshaft balancer. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER .
  15. Install water pump. See WATER PUMP .
